John Robert Johnson passed away unexpectedly on March 21, 2026, in Shorewood, Illinois. He was a loving son and brother, a devoted husband, a cherished father, and an adored grandfather.
Born on April 29, 1957, in Frostburg, Maryland, John was the son of John Robert and Emma Jean (Walters) Johnson. He attended Fort Hill High School, where he proudly played football for the Fort Hill Sentinels. In 1974, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably until 1988. After completing his military service, John spent time teaching before owning and operating his own carpentry business.
John had a generous spirit and a remarkable gift for connecting with others. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and served as a mentor to many throughout his life. He never met a stranger—conversation came naturally to him, no matter where he was. John began each morning with gratitude for the gift of a new day and carried a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He loved animals, the outdoors, and the quiet moments spent fishing, tending to his yard, visiting the dog park, or gazing at the stars and reflecting on the universe.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughters, Mandy Cook, Kristy (Xylon) Griffen, Rhianna (William) Caplice, and Katy (Edmund) Bowen; and his grandchildren, Ashley, Alyssa, Xylah, Xandria, Isabelle, Edmund, Noah, William, Violet, and August. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who admired him, as well as his loyal dog, Rocket.
A private memorial service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been created to help establish a memorial bench in John’s honor. https://www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-bench-for-john-at-his-favorite-park?attribution_id=sl:c04b5494-c81f-4f11-806d-4ab8e73e4c69&lang=en_US&ts=1775227044&utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_content=amp17_ta-amp20_t1&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link
