Gilbert L. Niznik

July 29, 1931 — March 4, 2024

Gilbert Lamar Niznik, age 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2024 in Plainfield, Illinois. Born on July 29th, 1931, in Joliet, Illinois, Gilbert was the beloved son of Loretta and Gordon Niznik.

He was preceded in death by his son, Chris Niznik; siblings, Gordon, and Ernest. Gilbert was a devoted husband, married for 58 years to his beloved wife, Mary Lou Perona, who also preceded him in death. Together, they shared a lifetime of cherished memories and adventures. A proud alumnus of the University of Illinois, Gilbert pursued a career in law and served his country in Germany after completing law school. He practiced law in Plainfield at the esteemed firm of Saxon, Niznik & Peterson and later as an individual practitioner. In 1990, Gilbert was appointed as a Will County Associate Circuit Court Judge Associate, where he served with distinction and integrity. While stationed in Germany, he landed one of the most enviable roles imaginable: serving as a lifeguard at a German swimming pool for the US Army. Later in life, he found joy in sailing, playing tennis, and even taking to the skies in private planes. However, some of his most cherished moments were spent in his house in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and the sun-kissed shores of Sarasota, Florida. It was there that he shared countless laughs, cherished sunsets, and his deep love for the water with his beloved wife and family.

Gilbert's greatest pride and joy were his family. He leaves behind his devoted children, Maria Behnen, Julie Persico, Riley Niznik, and their spouses, Paul Behnen, Dean Persico, and Susie Niznik; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Mario, Anthony, Louis, Gavin, Jarret, and Natalie. He is also survived by his sister, Madeline; numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will always cherish his memory.

Gilbert will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, sharp wit, and infectious laughter that could light up a room. Nothing gave him greater joy than sharing an Old Style and bratwurst in Lake Geneva or indulging in his favorite pie, Key Lime, in Sarasota with family or friends—though he was known to sneak an extra slice when no one was looking. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to https://www.alz.org/ in Gilbert's honor. A private celebration of Gilbert's life will be held with immediate family. Gilbert's legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in peace, knowing he was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered.
